Description A delicately flavoured lentil and tomato soup which is a part of every south indian meal

Ingredients

3 tbsp thuvar dhal

3 medium tomatoes

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/4 rasam powder

5-6 clove garlic crushed

5-6 curry leaves

1/4 tsp mustard seeds

1/4 tsp pepper

1/4 tsp jeera

2 tbsp tamarind paste

1 tsp oil

salt to taste

1 tsp chopped coriander leaves

a pinch of hing

Method

  1. Boil the thuvar dhal with the turmeric powder and salt with lots of water
  2. Crush the tomatoes along with the dhal and boil for sometime along with a few pods of garlic and a little chopped coriander leaves
  3. Grind the pepper and jeera to a coarse powder
  4. Heat the oil and add the mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves, crushed pepper jeera powder, garlic
  5. Add this to the dhal and tomato
  6. Add the tamarind paste and cook for sometime
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves
